New Ways of Seeing: Hausu

From Micah Vanderhoof, Theater Manager
Hausu

Director: Nobuhiko Obayashi
Available on the Criterion Channel

Nobuhiko Obayashi’s classic horror-comedy is a-never-to-be-missed cult essential when it plays at your local theater, but relocating your watching experience to the exhibition space of your living room, has the potential to draw out new layers of meaning.  After a group of self-descriptively-named girls takes a summer trip together to stay at the house of an aunt, they have a series of increasingly strange (and funny) encounters and realize that the house is haunted. With psychedelia meets spooky-scary meets soap-opera aesthetic that is both enticing, funny, and weird, viewing Hausu at home might make you wonder if that the dreamy day-time-TV filter allows something truly sinister and off to creep inside… only to laugh it off moments later.
