Sound of Metal

The Northwest Film Center and the Portland Art Museum present Sound of Metal. Streaming online Thursday, December 3 at 7 p.m. This special sneak preview one-night screening is FREE for PAM & NWFC members only.

After premiering at Toronto Film Festival, this groundbreaking and gutsy performance by Riz Ahmed is one of the most talked-about of the year. Join us for a sneak preview of this incredibly powerful story of a musician who begins to unravel as he experiences hearing loss and his precarious, itinerant life on the road comes to a screeching halt. With some of the best sound design and creative use of music in recent cinema, this is an example of Cinema Unbound at its best and a reminder that great stories are not only seen but heard.

—Amy Dotson, Director of the Northwest Film Center and Curator of Film and New Media, Portland Art Museum

During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.
